Grimsby Town Eliminates Manchester United in an Epic Penalty Shootout

Grimsby Town goalkeeper Christy Pym expressed that he still hadn’t fully processed the victory, after his team managed to eliminate Manchester United from the Carabao Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout that ended with a score of 12-11. Bryan Mbeumo, with his shot hitting the crossbar, sealed the fate of the match in a penalty shootout that lasted 18 minutes, after a 2-2 draw at the end of the 90 minutes at Blundell Park.

I still can’t believe it. I’m a Manchester United fan, so on the one hand I’m a little annoyed. Nights like this are what you play football for. Simply brilliant.

Christy Pym
Pym, who revealed himself to be a United supporter, added: “I should have done a little better [in the penalty shootout], right? I made a save to keep us in the game and the lads did the rest. It’s brilliant.” Charles Vernam put the League Two team ahead in the 22nd minute with a powerful shot that went in near the post defended by United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana. The Mariners continued to put pressure on their Premier League rivals and were rewarded with a second goal before the break, when Onana failed to clear Vernam’s cross and Tyrell Warren sent the ball into the back of the net. Mbeumo scored with his first goal for United in the 75th minute, and Harry Maguire equalized the score with a header in the 89th minute. Vernam admitted that his nerves almost played a trick on him during the penalty shootout.

It was a nervous wait. When it goes on and on, you never know. We scored and thought ‘we have a chance’ and then they kept scoring.

Charles Vernam
Vernam added: “It’s an incredible feeling, one that will live with us forever. The message all week has been about faith and knowing how good we are and the coach has instilled that.” He told us not only to show up, there’s always an opportunity if we play the right way with the right intensity. Why couldn’t it be us? “So achieving that is an incredible feeling and we are going to enjoy the moment.”
