Fluminense close to signing Santiago Moreno

Portland Timbers forward Santiago Moreno is on the verge of becoming a new player for Fluminense of Brazil, according to sources close to the negotiation. The transfer would be closed for a sum of $5.5 million, with the possibility of adding an additional $500,000 depending on the fulfillment of certain performance objectives. The agreement is expected to be finalized soon, as only the last administrative details are missing for Moreno to join the Brazilian team.

The agreement, if finalized, would end a period of intense negotiations that even led Moreno to miss the Leagues Cup match that the Portland Timbers played against Club América on Wednesday. At that moment, Moreno’s absence was described as “unjustified” by Portland, who threatened to involve MLS to apply disciplinary measures to the player. A team source stated that Fluminense’s offer did not meet the club’s valuation, but it now appears that the transfer will go ahead despite the player’s absence from the match. Moreno, 25 years old, arrived at the Timbers in 2021 from América de Cali of Colombia, where he began his professional career. The player, who has a call-up to the Colombian national team, has participated in 136 league and playoff matches, scoring 21 goals and providing 19 assists.
