Ernst Tanner, Sporting Director of the Philadelphia Union, on Administrative Leave Amid MLS Investigation
Philadelphia Union announced this Wednesday that its sporting director, Ernst Tanner, has been placed on administrative leave. Major League Soccer (MLS) has decided to reopen an investigation into allegations of inappropriate workplace behavior. According to a recent report, Tanner allegedly made racist comments directed at Black players, coaches, and referees. He is also accused of using sexist and anti-gay language in the workplace. These allegations were presented to the league through a complaint from the MLS Players Association.MLS had previously concluded an investigation into the allegations, but closed the case after being unable to verify the claims. Following the publication of the report, the league announced the reopening of the investigation to further analyze the allegations. MLS stated that, although the initial investigation could not corroborate the accusations, it will be reopened following the emergence of new allegations and possible information. The league maintains an anonymous hotline for complaints and encourages anyone with relevant information to come forward. Tanner joined the Union as sporting director in 2018 and signed a contract extension in 2021.“The Philadelphia Union takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously and is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone associated with our club. Discrimination, harassment, or abusive conduct of any kind has no place here, and all personnel must complete annual sensitivity training,” the club communicated.
