Liverpool fans at Wembley display a banner in honor of Diogo Jota.
An emotional tribute was paid to Diogo Jota and André Silva at Wembley Stadium, prior to the Community Shield match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace.
Jota, along with his brother Silva, died in a car accident in Spain on July 3rd. The event was honored with floral offerings and a minute of silence before the start of the match.
Liverpool fans expressed their respect by singing the anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” while the offerings were displayed. In addition, a white banner with the image of the striker and the number 20 was unfurled, accompanied by the legend “Diogo J”.
Ian Rush, Liverpool legend, along with Palace chairman Steve Parish and Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt, placed the offerings in the Liverpool supporters’ area. Fans from both clubs offered an ovation as a sign of respect, while images of the deceased brothers were projected on the stadium screens.
The moment of silence was interrupted by a minority of Palace fans, which generated a strong reaction at the other end of the field and from other Palace supporters, who tried to silence those who did not respect the tribute.Ian Rush, Liverpool legend, Palace chairman Steve Parish, and Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt laid the offerings at the Liverpool end.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his pride in how his team has faced this tragedy.
This summer has been difficult for everyone involved with the club. Diogo Jota’s passing had a big impact on all of us and it’s something we are still dealing with.

Slot added that the club will continue to provide support to Jota’s family, highlighting the strength and courage of his players in the face of this difficult situation. “We will always carry Diogo in our hearts and thoughts, wherever we go,” he concluded.
