Donnarumma Confirms His Departure from Paris Saint-Germain

Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has confirmed his departure from Paris Saint-Germain after being excluded from the team for the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. Donnarumma expressed his feelings through a post on Instagram:

“To the special fans of Paris, from the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the field – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain. Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the success of the team. I am disappointed and discouraged.”

PSG coach Luis Enrique took responsibility for the decision:

“Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, without a doubt, and even better as a person. But this is the life of high-level footballers. I am 100 percent responsible for this difficult decision. If it were easy, anyone would do it; these decisions have to do with the profile of the goalkeeper that my team needs.”

PSG recently signed goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille. The transfer was reported to be worth 40 million euros, plus 15 million euros in bonuses. According to sources, the club does not wish to keep Donnarumma, and an offer is expected from Chelsea, Manchester United or Inter Milan, teams that have contacted the player’s agent, Enzo Raiola. Donnarumma, who was already one of the team’s highest-paid players with 850,000 euros per month, was seeking a salary increase and refused to accept the new salary structure imposed by the club’s sporting director, Luis Campos. Donnarumma was a key player for PSG last season, with important saves in matches against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal. However, Luis Enrique is looking for a goalkeeper with better distribution and who feels more comfortable with the ball at his feet, qualities that Chevalier possesses. Donnarumma expressed his desire to say goodbye to the fans: “I hope to have the opportunity to look at the fans at the Parc des Princes once more and say goodbye properly. If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home. To my teammates, my second family, thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers. Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honor. Thank you, Paris.”
