The football world mourns the loss of Diogo Jota

The sports world is in mourning following the tragic news of the death of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who lost their lives in a car accident in Spain on Thursday morning. The news has shocked the football community, generating a wave of condolences and tributes. The confirmation of Jota’s death, at the age of 28, was announced by Liverpool Football Club, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The Civil Guard informed the media about the incident. The death of Jota comes a few weeks after his marriage to Rute Cardoso, his long-time partner, with whom he had three children. The footballer recently celebrated the Premier League title with his teammates on May 25th, adding four important titles during his time at the club.

The club expressed its “devastation” at the loss of Jota and requested that “the privacy of the family, friends, colleagues and club staff of Diogo and André be respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss”.

The Liverpool City Council announced that the Town Hall flag has been lowered to half-mast as a sign of mourning for the death of Jota and his brother. The Liverpool City Council’s post on X said: “Our thoughts are with his family and friends, and with everyone connected to Liverpool FC.” Jota’s teammate in the Portuguese national team, Cristiano Ronaldo, sent his condolences to the brothers’ family.
