Liam Delap revealed that Cole Palmer influenced his decision to join Chelsea this summer.
The 22-year-old striker sparked the interest of several clubs, including Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United, but ultimately opted for Stamford Bridge, completing a £30 million transfer earlier this month.
Delap and Palmer shared a youth team at Manchester City, where they won the Premier League 2 title in the 2020-21 season. The forward confessed that he sought advice from his former teammate while making his decision.
Palmer, who joined Chelsea from City in the summer of 2023, has become one of the most prominent figures in the Premier League. Delap hopes to emulate that éxito. There are many influencing factors. I have a good relationship with the coach. I know how he plays. I have played in this system before. I know many players here and the club’s project, how they see the future. That’s what excited me.

Delap also confirmed that the transfer altered his summer plans, as he originally aimed to participate in the European Under-21 Championship with England.Of course, that’s the goal. I think we both had similar positions and he’s done incredibly well, so I hope I can do it too. He’s always been that good and everyone at City will tell you. The speed at which he’s achieved it is incredible. But I think, ultimately, it was always going to happen.

The Chelsea coach, Enzo Maresca, has suggested that Delap could be the future number 9 for England. When asked if he had spoken with the senior coach, Thomas Tuchel, Delap replied:I had my sights set on the Eurocup all season and I was really looking forward to that. But I signed here and they wanted me to be here. I also want to be here. I need to get to know everyone, that’s why I’m here.

I think it will obviously help being at a club like this. If I play badly, obviously I know I won’t be here, but if I play well, then it gives me a good opportunity.
