Haaland remains unstoppable, but injuries worry Manchester City

Manchester City secured a 2-0 away win against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, but the joy was marred by injuries in midfield. Erling Haaland continues his goalscoring streak, scoring his 24th goal in 14 matches this season, both for the club and the national team. However, Pep Guardiola’s team suffered the loss of Nico González due to an injury. Haaland, with 53 goals in 51 Champions League matches, has scored in nine consecutive matches with City in all competitions. The Norwegian striker has expressed feeling at the best moment of his career. The victory in the continental tournament came at a cost, as González had to leave the field in the second half due to an apparent injury to his right knee. González was substituting for Rodri, who is currently out of action due to a hamstring injury. Mateo Kovacic came on as a substitute for Gonzalez in the 56th minute, after recently recovering from an Achilles tendon injury that kept him out for five months. Bernardo Silva also scored for City, extending their unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions.

“I’m glad Erling scored again and that Bernardo did too, with his head. I remember, he was a bit like Messi. It’s like a hammer. They have a hammer in their neck. They are small but very good with the contact of the head,” Guardiola commented.

Guardiola’s team also ended a run of five away games without a win in the Champions League. City, which is unbeaten in nine games in all competitions, has seven points in its three group stage matches. “The difference with last season is that we had injured players in the hospital,” Guardiola added. The next challenge for Manchester City is to visit Aston Villa on Sunday, where Haaland will look to score for a seventh consecutive game in the Premier League.
