Yelich Returns to Action with the Brewers
ARLINGTON, Texas – Christian Yelich, the designated hitter for the Milwaukee Brewers, reappeared on the team on Monday night after missing five games due to lower back discomfort. Yelich, who was placed in the fourth spot in the batting order, joined the Brewers at the start of a three-game series against the Texas Rangers, who are seeking a playoff spot. The 33-year-old player had participated in 132 of Milwaukee’s 144 games this season before the opening game in Texas. His batting average is .268, with 27 home runs and 92 RBIs, leading the team in both categories. Last year, he only played 73 games before undergoing back surgery that ended his season in August. The Brewers manager, Pat Murphy, expressed his amazement at the number of games played by Yelich, especially after his back surgery. Yelich was scratched at the last minute last Wednesday before the 6-3 victory over Philadelphia. Murphy explained that Yelich began to feel pain during a series against Arizona late last month. Despite this, he played in 22 consecutive games before leaving the lineup last week. Murphy also commented that Yelich asked him the same day of the game: “Am I going to play, right?” Highlighting his desire to participate. On Monday, Yelich made his 112th start as a designated hitter and has also started 18 games in left field this season. Although Murphy mentioned that “there’s a reason” for Yelich to play a couple of games in the outfield before the regular season ends, he clarified that it’s not a priority. It feels good, he wants to play. It’s amazing that he has played so many games.
