Barcelona Seeks Reinforcements: João Cancelo in the Crosshairs

Barcelona is exploring the possibility of repatriating Portuguese international João Cancelo in the January transfer market. A source has confirmed that the club has initiated talks to finalize the transfer.

Initial conversations have been held with Al Hilal, Cancelo’s current club in Saudi Arabia, and with the player’s entourage. The coach, Hansi Flick, has requested defensive reinforcements for this month.

The negotiations are focused on the financial structure of the agreement. The Catalan club, leader of LaLiga, prefers a loan for the moment, assuming part of the footballer’s salary.

Cancelo, 31 years old, played the 2023-24 season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester City, playing 42 matches and scoring four goals. Subsequently, he moved to Al Hilal in the summer of 2024, signing a contract until 2027.

The source indicates that Cancelo is open to returning to Europe. Furthermore, it is rumored that another of his former clubs, Inter Milan, is also interested in his services.

The Barcelona coach, Hansi Flick, expressed his desire to incorporate another defender in January, following the injury of Andreas Christensen, who will be out due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury for the next four months.

Ronald Araújo has also been absent since November due to a mental health leave, leaving Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín as the starting center-back pairing in recent weeks.

The arrival of Cancelo would provide depth on the flanks and could allow Jules Koundé, who has played at right-back for most of his career at Barcelona, to return to the center of defense, his preferred position.

Throughout his career, Cancelo has played as a right and left-back, and can also perform in more advanced positions if needed.
