Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s coach, praised his team’s mentality after the 1-0 victory against Manchester United. Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal of the match at Old Trafford, after a header in the 13th minute, after United’s goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, failed to clear a corner taken by Declan Rice. In September 2020, less than a year after Arteta took over, Arsenal had only won two of their last 40 away games against the traditional “Big Six” teams. However, in the last two seasons, Arsenal remains unbeaten in 20 league games against Liverpool, Chelsea, United, Manchester City and Tottenham, a record they extended to 21 on Sunday.

When asked if his team had overcome the idea that they struggled to win against those teams, Arteta replied:

Well, I think that was the case… We were here at Old Trafford for 18 or 22 years without winning before I arrived, and now I enter the dressing room, we win the first match here, and we’re still not happy. Good sign.

Arteta added that they were happy with the result:

A great, great result to arrive at the first match of the season at Old Trafford. When you feel that they are building something special and pushing the moment with the new signings and they want to start the season in a good way and you are able to take the victory, I think I am very happy.

The technician highlighted his team’s ability to react to mistakes.

Today we showed it in a different way. I think we did two things very well. One, taking advantage of set pieces and then reacting, especially to mistakes. Some of them are necessary, others unusual. But the way each player reacted to that gives us the opportunity to win the match.

Arsenal will host Leeds on August 23. Meanwhile, United will visit Fulham on August 24.
