Arsenal Women sign Olivia Smith in a record transfer

Arsenal has confirmed the signing of Canadian international Olivia Smith on a long-term contract. Sources close to the club confirm that this is a world record transfer, marking the first signing of £1 million in women’s football. The transfer of the 20-year-old player to the Champions League-winning team surpasses the previous record set, according to sources consulted. Arsenal matched Liverpool’s expectations to secure the signing of the young prospect.

It’s a privilege and an honor to sign for Arsenal. It’s my dream to compete for the most important titles here in England and in Europe and I’m excited to start and contribute to that here with Arsenal.

Olivia Smith scored nine goals in all competitions for Liverpool last year. Arsenal coach Renée Slegers added: “Olivia is a young and promising player and we believe she can make a great contribution here at Arsenal. We have been impressed by her mentality and character, standing out in two European leagues at such a young age. I know she has a level of ambition that matches ours and we are looking forward to working with her as she continues to grow at the club.” Before joining Liverpool, Smith spent a season in Portugal with Sporting CP, finishing her debut campaign with 16 goals in 28 appearances before moving to the Women’s Super League.

Internationally, Smith became Canada’s youngest player when she earned her first call-up at the age of 15 in 2019. To date, she has made 18 appearances and scored four goals for Canada.

Arsenal were looking to capitalize on their Champions League victory and wanted to expand their squad after Slegers’ first season in charge. A source added that the club also wanted to bring in a young player to reduce the average age of the squad.
