Real Betis winger Antony offered apologies to the fans after being sent off in Sunday’s draw against Girona. The incident occurred in the 87th minute, with the score tied at 1-1. Antony attempted to control a ball with a bicycle kick inside Girona’s area, but his boot accidentally hit the face of rival Joel Roca. Following VAR review, referee Iosu Galech Apezteguía changed the initial yellow card to a direct red card. Antony, visibly saddened, apologized to Betis fans as he left the field. The expulsion will mean that the Brazilian international will miss Sunday’s league derby against Sevilla. Antony, 25 years old, expressed his sorrow on social media:
Since joining Betis on a permanent deal from Manchester United in September, Antony has scored six goals in 12 matches across all competitions. Antony impressed during his loan spell at Betis in the second half of last season and has become a regular in Manuel Pellegrini’s starting eleven. Betis, who are in fifth place in LaLiga, host Utrecht in the Europa League on Thursday before this weekend’s derby at Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
