Benfica presidential candidate denies interest in Ruben Amorim
João Noronha Lopes, a candidate for the presidency of Benfica, has denied rumors about his intention to bring coach Ruben Amorim back to the club if he is victorious in next month’s elections. Although Noronha Lopes has expressed his admiration for Amorim, 40 years old, he assures that Bruno Lage will remain at the helm of Benfica if he assumes the presidency.Noronha Lopes is considered the main candidate to succeed Manu Rui Costa on October 25. Rumors about Amorim’s possible arrival at Benfica grew when the Portuguese businessman was seen in the stands of the Etihad Stadium during Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to City. After returning to Portugal, Noronha Lopes stated that he did not meet with Bernardo Silva or Ruben Amorim. Noronha Lopes’ vice-president, Nuno Gomes, was also present at the match and stated: “One thing I do know is that Ruben Amorim will be Benfica’s coach someday.”Ruben Amorim is a great coach, he has a contract with Manchester United. He is a Benfica fan. Of course I like him. I don’t have any contract for Ruben to sign. Bruno Lage will be the Benfica coach, naturally. I will work with him, as he is the Benfica coach. I will not be a factor of instability at Benfica.
