Ruben Amorim admitted that Manchester United’s victory over Chelsea was “complicated”, but urged his players to build on the 2-1 triumph to ease the pressure at Old Trafford. Manchester United were in a comfortable position with a 2-0 lead, after taking advantage of Robert Sánchez’s early red card, with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. The expulsion of the Brazilian just before halftime made the second half uncomfortable for Amorim’s team. Trevoh Chalobah’s header at the end of the match generated a tense finish, but United held firm to achieve their second victory of the season, giving the Portuguese coach vital breathing room after a week of speculation about his future.

It was really important and I think we deserved it.

Ruben Amorim
“We started the match very well. Very well in terms of pressure and pushing the opponent and showing that we were there, even to involve our fans,” said Amorim. “Of course, the goalkeeper’s expulsion helped us a lot, but we were in control, we scored two goals. With everything going well, we complicated it with the expulsion. In the second half, I think we handled it well, but in the end, the last 15 minutes were tough for us. They scored a goal and we suffered together, but we managed to win.”
Casemiro scored Manchester United's second goal against Chelsea but was then sent off for a second yellow card before half time.
The result gives Amorim the chance to achieve consecutive league victories for the first time during his tenure when they travel to Brentford next weekend. The 40-year-old coach has told his players that he wants to see the desire to win at the Gtech Community Stadium on the first day of their preparations.

It’s the urgency of that feeling that we need to win, because the situation is very difficult at this moment. Let’s go to the field and that feeling that there are not two or three results, but one. Let’s do it.

Ruben Amorim
“In the end, we can do it or not. But that feeling of urgency, it’s not about the tactical aspect or skill. It’s the feeling that we’re going to the next game, we need to win the next game. That’s the only way. And that starts in the next training session, not in the next game.”
