Alyssa Thompson Signs for Chelsea Women

United States women’s national team forward Alyssa Thompson has signed with Chelsea from Angel City FC of the NWSL. The initial transfer could reach $1.5 million (1.1 million pounds). The deal could reach $2 million (£1.5 million) with add-ons, although it will not surpass the world record set on Friday, when London City Lionesses signed Grace Geyoro from Paris Saint-Germain for £1.43 million ($1.9 million). Chelsea showed great interest in Thompson, and Mayra Ramírez’s hamstring injury accelerated their interest in the 20-year-old player. Alyssa Thompson joins Catarina Macario and Naomi Girma as the latest USWNT players to join the West London club.

Thompson, who signed a new three-year contract with Angel City in January, did not participate in the team’s NWSL match on Monday and was listed as an excused absence. Coach Alexander Straus, who took over in June, said after the 2-1 victory over Bay FC on Monday that the previous days had been “difficult”. Since being selected as the number 1 pick in the 2023 draft, Thompson has played 62 matches with the club and scored 15 goals in the NWSL. This season, she has scored six goals in 16 league appearances.

“Chelsea is an incredible club, one of the best in the world. Being able to play with players who are the best in the world is an incredible opportunity at such a young age and I want to learn, grow and develop a lot. I feel that Chelsea is an incredible environment to do it”.

She is a dynamic winger with incredible speed, who can play on either flank and is very good in one-on-one situations. Alyssa is one of the best and most exciting young players in the world, and we are looking forward to seeing her develop even further during her time at Chelsea.” The forward has been capped 22 times for the United States women’s national team after debuting at 17 years old. Chelsea kick off their Women’s Super League campaign with a thrilling match against Manchester City on Friday.
