Xabi Alonso Defends Vinícius Júnior’s Reaction After Real Madrid’s Victory

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has defended Vinícius Júnior following the player’s reaction to being substituted during the match against Espanyol, where the merengue team won with a score of 2-0. Vinícius was substituted in the 77th minute of the match at the Santiago Bernabéu, giving way to Rodrygo. The reaction of the Brazilian winger was evident, showing his discontent by throwing a water bottle and raising his arms, before having a conversation with the coaching staff.

“Vini just lacked the goal today,” Alonso commented in the post-match press conference.

The coach explained that the substitution was due to the need to refresh the team in that position. Furthermore, he mentioned that Franco, who was also substituted at the same time, reacted similarly. Brahim Díaz was the player who came on for Franco.
When questioned about Vinícius’ reaction, Alonso added: “It’s normal… In the end, it happens to everyone. I’m happy with the game Vini played, and the game Franco played too, sometimes you need fresh legs, and the schedule is demanding.” So far this season, Vinícius has been a substitute twice in the six matches played by Madrid in all competitions. Real Madrid’s victory over Espanyol meant the fifth consecutive win in LaLiga, consolidating its position at the top of the table. The match also marked the return of Jude Bellingham, who came on as a substitute in the final minutes, adding his first minutes of the season.

“The more we find Bellingham, the better we will play,” Alonso stated.
