Ajax vs. Groningen Match Suspended Due to Incidents

An Eredivisie match between Ajax and Groningen, played at the Johan Cruyff Arena, was suspended due to incidents caused by fans. The match was stopped after fireworks and flares were lit behind one of the goals. Referee Bas Nijhuis led the players off the field five minutes after the start of the game. When trying to restart the match, the incidents were repeated, which led to the definitive suspension. The Dutch club confirmed that the match will resume behind closed doors on Tuesday, December 2nd.

The match between Ajax and FC Groningen will resume on Tuesday at 14:30. The game was suspended on Sunday evening after fireworks were repeatedly thrown, with the score at 0-0.

After the incident, the club issued a statement condemning what happened.

Ajax considers what happened in the stadium tonight scandalous. We offer our apologies to anyone who has been affected by this in any way. The safety of the spectators and players has been put at risk. That is unacceptable. We explicitly distance ourselves from this misconduct. Fireworks have no place in the stadium.
