Ben Whittaker will face German Benjamin Gavazi in his first fight after signing with Matchroom, as revealed by Eddie Hearn. Whittaker (9-0-1, 6 KOs) will headline an event in his hometown of Birmingham on November 29. This fight will mark the debut of the Olympic silver medalist under Matchroom promotion, after starting his professional career with Boxxer in 2022. Hearn explained that the 1.90-meter English boxer, with 3.5 million social media followers, was close to joining Matchroom from the beginning of his professional career.

People don’t know that we agreed a deal with Ben Whittaker when he turned professional.

Eddie Hearn
Hearn reported that a promotional session was prepared and everything was filmed with Whittaker while the details of the contract were being finalized. However, Boxxer presented a higher offer, frustrating Matchroom’s plans, even after having made the promotional recording.

It’s a phenomenal signing for us. For two or three years we had to observe his career. I’ve seen his following and even my children, when I told them we had signed him, knew everything about him.

Eddie Hearn
Hearn added that Whittaker has greater potential than people think, he just needs to believe in himself and stay active. He believes he can win the light heavyweight world championship and, if he achieves it, he would achieve great popularity. Whittaker, 28 years old and a light heavyweight, last fought in April, where he defeated his English compatriot Liam Cameron in two rounds, after a technical draw against the same opponent a year earlier, when the fight was stopped due to an injury to Whittaker.
