The Wallabies present a revamped lineup for the second test against the British and Irish Lions in Melbourne. Rob Valetini and Will Skelton join the starting team for Saturday’s clash at the MCG. Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt revealed his team for the match on Thursday afternoon, with the return of Valetini, two-time John Eales Medal winner, and Skelton, captain of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, as highlights on the list. The absence of the Brumbies’ third line was felt in the 27-19 defeat in Brisbane last week, where Australia only managed 79 meters in the first half. However, Valetini should significantly improve the Wallabies’ ball carrying, providing a solid base for a back line that remains unchanged. Skelton, for his part, hadn’t played for the Wallabies since the match against Scotland in Edinburgh last year. His imposing presence in the second row will strengthen the Wallabies’ maul and add another key option for carrying the ball, alongside Valetini. This experienced duo is joined in the front row by Waratahs hooker Dave Porecki, who replaces Matt Faessler in the first line.
Schmidt also commented on the experience that Valetini and Skelton bring to the team, highlighting their ability to influence other players. Regarding the backs line, it remains unchanged, with Len Ikitau and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii pairing up in the center for the fifth time. Schmidt has opted for a 6-2 split on the bench in Melbourne, with Jeremy Williams and Langi Gleeson. Last week’s debutant, Nick Champion de Crespigny, is out of the team due to Valetini’s return. Some of those decisions were more difficult because of what the bench did last week.
