Amidst the anticipation for the selection of the British & Irish Lions, coach Andy Farrell opted for boldness and current form over sentimentality.

This team, focused on the present, stands out for its inexperience, with 26 of the 38 players debuting in the competition. However, the promise that the group holds is a reason for enthusiasm.

The final selection meeting began at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and lasted until 3 p.m., a reflection of the complexity of the process.

One of the surprises was Henry Pollock, a 20-year-old from the Northampton Saints, who debuted for England in March. His outstanding performance in the victory over Leinster secured his place in the team, opening the possibility of becoming an emblematic figure of the tour.

I’ve seen him a couple of times live and I like what I see. As with all the great players, he’s always trying to make a difference. There’s energy and dynamism about him. That’s how you tend to have big moments in the game because you’re looking for them. That’s what I like to see in his game and in many others who have also been part of the team.

Maro Itoje, confirmed as captain, smiled at the acclaim for Pollock, a reminder of his own youth and ambition in 2017. Pollock’s selection is an unexpected turn from Farrell, demonstrating that age is not a barrier to compete.

Marcus Smith’s versatility also played a key role. Although considered a fly-half, his ability to cover multiple positions made him a valuable option for Farrell. Smith competed with players like Tom Jordan, who can also play in various positions.

In the opening selection, Farrell chose Finn Russell, Fin Smith, and Marcus Smith, leaving out Sam Prendergast, Owen Farrell, and George Ford.

Farrell’s decision not to include Owen Farrell, his own son, also sparked debate. Owen, one of England’s most prominent players, was not called up due to his physical condition after a season with injuries in France.

The 38-player list allows for flexibility, and names are expected to be added before the start in Perth on June 28. Players like Jamie George, Tom Jordan, George Ford, Owen Farrell, Manny Feyi-Waboso, Prendergast, and Darcy Graham could be considered in the future.

Caelan Doris, unfortunately, missed the call-up due to a shoulder injury. Farrell highlighted his disappointment, considering him an experienced player and leader.

Farrell’s balanced team includes two Welsh players and a single France-based player, Blair Kinghorn. The team seeks versatility and a spine with experience in important victories.

Pollock, with his audacity and talent, embodies the spirit of the Lions, with the opportunity to become a recognized name.
