Scotland Secures Place in Women’s Rugby World Cup Quarterfinals
Scotland secured their place in the Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-finals after a hard-fought 29-15 victory over Fiji at the Salford Community Stadium. The Scottish team demonstrated their strength and determination in a crucial Group B match.
The match began with an early try from Francesca McGhie, followed by two from Rhona Lloyd, establishing a 17-5 lead at halftime. Despite Fiji’s effort, with a try from Manuqalo Komaitai after the break, Scotland kept their composure.
McGhie, with his fifth try of the tournament, and an excellent individual effort from Emma Orr, which gave Scotland a bonus point, sealed the victory. This result guarantees Scotland a place in the top two of the group.
Fiji scored a late try through Karalaini Naisewa, but their exit from the group stage was already confirmed. Scotland joins Canada, the group leader, in the next phase of the tournament.
Despite starting with a 10-0 lead in the first 10 minutes, Scotland faced a demanding match. Two of their four tries came while Fiji played with 14 players due to yellow cards.
McGhie opened the scoring at 94 seconds, following a play by Orr. Vika Matarugu of Fiji received a yellow card for a high tackle.
Scotland took advantage of the numerical advantage, with Evie Gallagher assisting Helen Nelson and Lloyd scoring in the 10th minute. Fiji responded, and Loraini Senivutu scored in the first half.
Orr and Lloyd collaborated again, increasing the Scottish lead in the 34th minute. Fiji intensified their game in the second half, but Scotland held firm.
Komaitai scored for Fiji in the 51st minute, but McGhie responded with another try. Orr made a spectacular individual play, securing the bonus point.
Alowesi Nakoci had a try disallowed for Fiji and McGhie prevented a certain score by dragging a Fijian player off the field.
Naisewa scored for Fiji in the last five minutes, and Salote Nailolo received the third yellow card for her team.Emma Orr’s try gave Scotland the bonus point they needed to win against Fiji in Manchester.
