Farrell Prioritizes the Present Moment in Lions Selection
Amidst the expectations and debates, Andy Farrell has defined the British & Irish Lions team that will face Australia. The coach has set aside sentimentality, betting on players in their best current form. This group, with 26 debutants, focuses on the present, without ties to the past or the future.
The final selection meeting, which began at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, extended until 3 p.m., a clear indication of the meticulousness in the team selection.

The Surprise: Henry Pollock
One of the big surprises is Henry Pollock, the 20-year-old from the Northampton Saints. Despite his recent debut with England in March, his performance has been notable, securing a place in the team. Pollock has demonstrated exceptional potential, and his inclusion generated the biggest ovation during the announcement at the O2 Arena.
“He’s always trying to make a difference. There’s energy and dynamism about him. That’s how you tend to have big moments in the game because you’re looking for them. That’s what I like to see in his game and in many others who have also been called up,” Farrell commented on Pollock.

Maro Itoje, the Lions captain for 2025, acknowledged the excitement generated by Pollock, recalling his own youth on the team. Pollock, with his talent and energy, promises to be a key figure on this tour.
Farrell highlights the importance of youth: “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. He’s ready to compete. I think they’ll see the fight in him. I’m sure he’ll push everyone else who didn’t realize he was coming. I’m sure he’ll enjoy it.”
Versatile Players
The inclusion of Marcus Smith also highlights the search for versatile players. Although Smith sees himself as a fly-half, Farrell values his ability to cover multiple positions, an essential quality on Lions tours. Smith’s ability to adapt to different roles gave him an advantage over other players.

Regarding the openings, Farrell opted for Finn Russell, Fin Smith, and Marcus Smith, leaving out Sam Prendergast, Owen Farrell, and George Ford.
Crucial Decisions
The decision not to include Owen Farrell, the coach’s son, reflects a pragmatic stance. Despite his experience and potential impact, Owen’s lack of physical fitness led to his exclusion. The list of 38 players allows for flexibility, and it is expected that names will be added before the start of the tour in Australia on June 28th. Players like Jamie George, Tom Jordan, George Ford, Owen Farrell, Manny Feyi-Waboso, Prendergast, and Darcy Graham could receive a late call-up. Caelan Doris suffered a shoulder injury that prevented him from being selected, missing the opportunity to captain the team. Farrell has achieved a balance in the team, with versatile players and a solid backbone, key to success in matches. Pollock, with his youth and confidence, embodies the spirit of the Lions, ready to make his mark on rugby history. Itoje seeks a “selfless” team. He met with former Lions captains, seeking wisdom and advice. The challenge for the 2025 team is to be on the right side of Lions history.
