Scott Sabourin Suspended by the NHL

The NHL has announced the suspension of Scott Sabourin, Tampa Bay forward, for four games due to his actions in the last preseason game against the Florida Panthers. According to the NHL’s ruling, Sabourin will lose $16,145.84, approximately $850 for each second he was on the ice during the game. It’s still unclear when Sabourin will serve the suspension, as the Lightning sent him back to Syracuse of the American Hockey League on Monday. Sabourin only played one NHL game last season. Sabourin, who was on the ice for only 19 seconds on Saturday, received a penalty for going after Florida defenseman Aaron Ekblad at 2:17 of the game. That hit set the tone for a matchup where officials whistled 65 penalties, issued 13 ejections, and accumulated 312 penalty minutes. There were so many penalties that the team on the ice apparently lost track of who had been ejected. Florida’s Niko Mikkola was credited with an assist midway through the third period on a goal that was disallowed about 15 minutes later because Mikkola didn’t know he had been ejected earlier in the period, and therefore was not eligible to play.

He got silly. He got stupid in the end.

Sabourin was one of six players called up by Tampa Bay on Friday for Saturday’s game. These actions came a day after the Lightning and Panthers had another preseason game with 49 penalties and 186 penalty minutes. Ekblad left Saturday’s game after Sabourin’s hit. He was able to practice on Monday and is expected to play when the two-time Stanley Cup champions open their home season on Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks.
