Kris Letang Closes the Season Due to Health Problems
PITTSBURGH – Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has ended his season. The 19-year veteran will not participate in Pittsburgh’s final game against Washington on Thursday night, after undergoing a procedure to close a small hole in his heart.The announcement was made by the Penguins on Wednesday. Letang did not participate in the team’s practice on Tuesday due to a medical appointment, according to coach Mike Sullivan.
Letang, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, has had health problems in the past related to a hole in his heart, including episodes of strokes.
The team reported that Letang is expected to make a full recovery within four to six weeks. Pittsburgh was eliminated from playoff contention earlier this month.
Letang, who is under contract through the 2027-28 season, recorded nine goals and 21 assists in 74 games for Pittsburgh this year. This is his lowest point total in a full season since 2009-10. The 37-year-old also averaged the most ice time on the team, with 23:32 minutes.
