Canadiens trade Carey Price to the Sharks

The Montreal Canadiens have finalized a trade involving experienced goaltender Carey Price and a fifth-round pick in the 2026 draft, sending them to the San Jose Sharks. In return, the Canadiens receive defenseman Gannon Laroque.

Price, who hasn’t played in the NHL since April 29, 2022, has been on the long-term reserve list due to an injury. This season marks the end of his eight-year, $84 million contract. The financial move allows the Canadiens to free up space under the salary cap.

Before this transaction, Montreal exceeded the NHL salary cap by $5.9 million. With Price’s departure, the team is projected to have $4.56 million available.

During his NHL career, Price played 712 games with Montreal, accumulating a .917 save percentage and a 2.51 goals-against average. In the 2014-15 season, Price achieved a milestone by being the first goaltender to win the Hart Trophy, the Vezina Trophy, the Ted Lindsay Award, and a share of the William M. Jennings Trophy in the same season. In addition, he holds the record for most wins (361) for a Canadiens goaltender.

The Price family was preparing for a possible change. His wife, Angela, commented on social media about the possibility of the transfer, expressing that she felt something similar to what most of Montreal would feel, but that the important thing was the well-being of the team.

In this trade, the Canadiens acquire Laroque, a 22-year-old defenseman. Laroque, selected in the fourth round (103rd overall) by San Jose in 2021, has yet to make his NHL debut.
