Brent Burns Signs with the Colorado Avalanche

Seasoned defenseman Brent Burns, known for his distinguished career in the NHL, has signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche. The news was confirmed this Wednesday, marking a new chapter in the player’s career.

Burns, 40, joins the team after finishing his period with the Carolina Hurricanes. In his last season, the player demonstrated his worth by participating in all 82 games, scoring six goals and adding 29 points. His playing time of 20:57 per game highlights his importance in defense.

With this addition, Burns continues his impressive streak of 11 consecutive seasons playing 82 games, and accumulates the fourth-longest streak of consecutive games in NHL history, with a total of 925 games.

Burns’ arrival at the Avalanche, the team that was crowned Stanley Cup champion in 2022, gives him the opportunity to seek a new championship. Throughout his career, Burns has accumulated 261 goals and 910 points in 1,497 games.

The Avalanche management, led by Chris MacFarland, sought to reinforce the defense and add depth to the team. The arrival of Burns could be key to achieving these goals.

Burns’ contract gives the Avalanche seven defensemen under contract, opening the possibility of Burns competing for a spot on the second or third defensive pairing. The team already has a top-tier defensive pairing, made up of Norris Trophy winners Cale Makar and Devon Toews.

The incorporation of Burns could mean that he plays alongside Samuel Girard on the second defensive pairing, which would move Josh Manson to the third pairing. Another option would be to keep Girard and Manson together, placing Burns on the third pairing with Sam Malinski.
