Adam Mair, Sabres Player Development Coach, on Administrative Leave Following Arrest

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Sabres have placed player development coach Adam Mair on administrative leave. The decision was made following reports of the former NHL player’s arrest for driving while intoxicated, with three children in his vehicle. The Sabres confirmed they were aware of the situation, but offered no further comment on the matter. According to court records cited by WGRZ-TV Buffalo, Mair was arrested on September 4 outside of Rochester, New York, after rear-ending another vehicle. The former hockey player, 46, faces charges including three felonies and three misdemeanors, including aggravated drunk driving with a child in the vehicle and endangering the welfare of a minor. A person from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that a police report related to Mair was filed on that date, but declined to reveal its contents.

An officer wrote in the police report that he could smell a strong odor of alcohol on Mair’s breath and that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy.

Agents stated that Mair failed sobriety tests and initially refused to take a chemical breath test after being taken to the police station. Mair later changed his mind and submitted to the test, which revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.2%, more than double the legal limit of 0.08%. Mair, originally from Hamilton, Ontario, had an 11-season career in the NHL, including seven seasons with the Sabres. He retired after playing in the minor leagues in the 2011-12 season and was hired by the Sabres as a development coach in 2015. Mair’s administrative license comes just as Buffalo is hosting a five-day prospect tournament involving four other NHL teams. The Sabres are scheduled to begin their training camp next week.
