NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Titans’ young quarterback Cameron Ward didn’t hold back when evaluating the team’s offensive performance after two lackluster days of play.
Ward was intercepted by cornerback Roger McCreary on Wednesday, a pass that was deflected by linebacker Cody Barton. This was Ward’s fourth interception in two practices, adding to the three from Tuesday. Although not all interceptions are his fault, Ward acknowledges the need to improve his performance.I think we’re very mediocre right now.

The defense has dominated in both practices with equipment. Ward has had difficulty completing long passes, one of his usual strengths. However, he managed to connect with wide receiver Calvin Ridley on a deep pass, which slipped between safety Amani Hooker and cornerback Darrell Baker Jr. Another deep pass from Ward could have been completed, but Jha’Quan Jackson, second-year receiver, failed to catch the ball on a post route. Titans coach Brian Callahan is confident in Ward’s ability to bounce back. “That’s how it’s done,” Callahan commented. “I feel really good about how he’ll respond to any negativity.” This early adversity is a good test for Ward, who will face challenges in leading an offense that averaged only 18.3 points per game last season. Callahan values Ward’s command of the offense. The quarterback is comfortable with the playbook, but must improve timing and accuracy in his passes.I have to sync with my receivers, watch more videos, and be more accurate with the ball.

For this reason, Ward stays after practice to practice extra passes. He works overtime with veteran receiver Tyler Lockett, rookie Xavier Restrepo, and second-year receiver Bryce Oliver. Ridley also usually practices with Ward, but suffered a slight lower leg injury and was taken inside for evaluation.I may not be where I want to be, but I’m pitching to 15, 16 different people every day.
