Vikings Secure Josh Metellus with Multi-Million Dollar Extension
The Minnesota Vikings have secured the continuity of their safety, Josh Metellus, through a three-year contract extension. This agreement, which could be the last major move of the offseason for the team, guarantees the permanence of the key player, selected in the sixth round of the 2020 draft. The contract is worth $36 million, with a potential maximum of $42 million, and includes $25 million guaranteed. Metellus’ previous contract was scheduled to expire after this season.During his first three seasons, Metellus primarily excelled on special teams. However, his role expanded significantly in 2023 under the direction of defensive coordinator Brian Flores, taking on multiple positions on the field. Coach Kevin O’Connell recalled that Metellus has played in up to seven different positions during some games. In this period, Metellus has started in 27 games and has participated in 90% of the Vikings’ defensive plays.“I’m here, baby,” Metellus declared at a press conference prior to the Vikings’ training practice.

Metellus expressed his desire to remain on the team, unlike safety Cam Bynum, who rejected an extension last summer and signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts. Metellus participated in the opening practice of training camp, despite an ankle injury that kept him out of practice for two days. Metellus stated that he did not consider seeking a better deal in the open market, prioritizing his stay in Minnesota.“His journey means a lot to him,” O’Connell commented. “There are first-round draft picks who eventually get big extensions, but others don’t have that path and have to earn their place from where they were drafted and through their initial roles. It’s really amazing when you develop this value for the team.”

With this extension, the Vikings have invested nearly $350 million in their roster for 2025, taking advantage of quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s rookie contract to acquire a dozen veterans, either through free agency or via trades. They have also re-signed running back Aaron Jones, cornerback Byron Murphy Jr., safety Harrison Smith, and extended the contract of linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel.“I wanted to be here. I love being here. This is my home. I want to finish my career here. I feel like I embody exactly what we want to build here and I want to win for the city. I understand that the city expects something big, so I’m giving everything I have to this,” Metellus said.
