In NFL practices, the intensity varies, but the Minnesota Vikings recently demonstrated a high level. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy attempted to connect with Justin Jefferson, who has had a notable presence in the offseason program.

The Vikings’ defense, led by Byron Murphy Jr., displayed aggressive coverage, intercepting the ball. This situation highlights the environment the Vikings have created for McCarthy, who is expected to be the starter after missing his rookie season due to an injury.

Coach Kevin O’Connell highlighted the importance of the participation of key players like Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, who provide real-time feedback to McCarthy. Jefferson’s participation in the offseason is significant, especially considering his role in the organization.

He is an energy lighter of the whole building.

The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement states that participation in offseason work is voluntary. Jefferson’s presence this spring has a significant impact on McCarthy’s preparation, and on the team.

Before this spring, Jefferson and McCarthy hadn’t had much time together on the field. Last year, Sam Darnold took the majority of the snaps with the first team during OTAs and training camp. McCarthy focuses on building synchronization with his teammates, understanding that every repetition is valuable.

The Vikings’ defense also plays a crucial role in accelerating McCarthy’s development. During a practice, Murphy surprised McCarthy with a blitz, but the quarterback reacted quickly, connecting with an open receiver. Darnold mentioned that the spring and summer work against the Vikings’ defense facilitated his performance in the first games of the season. Former quarterback Kirk Cousins highlighted the difficulty of practicing against Flores’ defense, but acknowledged its value for the team’s development.

McCarthy values the experience of facing that defense in every practice, considering it invaluable. He has also learned from veteran safety Harrison Smith, who praised his intelligence. McCarthy has noticed how Smith tries to “trick” them with his movements.

This learning process will continue during the summer.
