In a recent statement, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa addressed criticism of his performance and contract, suggesting that external analysis of the game is simpler than execution on the field.

Tagovailoa Responds to Criticism

The player responded to the comments of Cam Newton, who questioned Tagovailoa’s performance in relation to his four-year, $212.1 million contract signed last summer. Newton pointed out that Tagovailoa receives more money than other prominent quarterbacks in the league. In addition, he criticized the player’s attitude, suggesting that he should show more determination and fewer public statements.

Anyone can play quarterback in this league. I want to see anyone from the street come and play quarterback.

Tua TagovailoaTagovailoa admitted to not having reached his peak level of play, but downplayed the critics’ comments. He argued that it is easier to give an opinion from the outside than to face the challenges of the position. The quarterback has thrown five touchdown passes, tied for seventh in the NFL after three games, but has also thrown four interceptions, tied for the second-most. His passer rating is 35.8, ranking 29th, and his 6.4 air yards per attempt put him in 25th place. He has fumbled the ball in all three of Miami’s games this season, with the team starting 0-3 for the first time since 2019. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel highlighted Tagovailoa’s mentality during the team’s losing streak, emphasizing his focus on improvement and his ability to stay focused.

He’s focused on being 1-0 against the New York Jets and that’s why I know he’s capable and I’m excited to see his next opportunity that we worked on all week.

Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards in 2023, in the only season in which he didn’t miss any games. In 2024, he missed six games due to injuries and has emphasized the importance of taking care of himself in 2025.
