Let’s kick off the 2025 NFL season! It’s time for the quarter-season awards, where we analyze the performance of players and coaches after the first four weeks of play. Although we are still evaluating the performance of many teams, we can already identify those who have stood out on the field. These are my picks for the awards, based on what I’ve seen on the field and in the statistics, rather than predictions of who will win at the end of the season. In addition, this year we are introducing the Protector of the Year award, which will recognize the best offensive lineman in the NFL. Below are my selections for Coach of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year, and the coveted Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Defensive Rookie of the Year
The start of the season for defensive rookies has been peculiar. Few have managed to stand out with sacks, which limits the options for pass rushers, usually favorites for this award. Although some players like Mason Graham of the Browns and Abdul Carter of the Giants show promise, I am not sure that any will have the performance to be in the top three. This leads us to consider high school players. Although Travis Hunter was the favorite, his start has been discreet. On the other hand, Will Johnson of the Cardinals and the cornerbacks of the Buccaneers and the Falcons have shown flashes. My initial choice comes from a team with a lot of young talent on defense.- Andrew Mukuba, S, Philadelphia Eagles: With the Eagles’ defense rebuilding, Mukuba has proven to be a key piece. His plays in the game against the Chiefs were impressive, showing his ability to intercept and pressure the quarterback.
- Upton Stout, CB, San Francisco 49ers: Despite not being physically imposing, Stout has been a great competitor in coverage and has made important plays.
- Carson Schwesinger, LB, Cleveland Browns: Schwesinger has been a revelation. Following injuries at the linebacker position, Schwesinger became a starter and has made a significant impact in his first month. He stood out in the victory against the Packers and has proven to be a versatile run defender.
Offensive Rookie of the Year
The 2025 running back class is proving its worth. However, no running back has been consistent enough to crack my top 3. For now, three receivers stand out above the rest. Tetairoa McMillan has had some important plays for the Panthers, but his efficiency has been slightly lower than that of his competitors.- Grey Zabel, G, Seattle Seahawks: Zabel could be one of the best offensive linemen, regardless of experience. He has allowed zero sacks and only one pressure, which is impressive for a rookie guard.
- Emeka Egbuka, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Egbuka leads rookies in receiving yards and touchdowns. He has proven to be a big-play player and has already exceeded expectations.
- Tyler Warren, TE, Indianapolis Colts: Warren has been even more efficient than Egbuka and McMillan. He has become a key piece in the Colts’ offense, demonstrating his versatility as a blocker and receiver.
Guardian of the Year
This new award recognizes the best offensive lineman in the NFL. Although it’s difficult to stand out, some offensive tackles are performing at a high level. My focus is on those who protect the quarterback and open up spaces in the running game.- Garett Bolles, OT, Denver Broncos: Bolles has shown a high level of play, with a low allowed pressure rate.
- Dion Dawkins, OT, Buffalo Bills: Dawkins makes the job easier for his quarterback, with a low allowed pressure rate.
- Penei Sewell, OT, Detroit Lions: Sewell is a complete player, with great mobility and blocking ability.
