Jerry Jones Reveals Details of Failed Contract with Micah Parsons
In a recent interview on Michael Irvin’s YouTube channel, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones shared details about contract negotiations with Micah Parsons. Jones stated that the proposed deal would have made Parsons the player with the highest salary guarantee, excluding quarterbacks, in the NFL.Jones blamed Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, for the lack of a final agreement, noting that negotiations have not resumed since then. Parsons, for his part, requested a meeting with Jones to discuss leadership issues, but according to him, the conversation quickly focused on his contract, indicating that the agreement would not be finalized without Mulugheta’s participation. Jones assured that the terms of the contract were agreed upon, including the duration, salary guarantee, and total amount.Nobody appreciates Micah Parsons more than the Cowboys or me. Nobody has offered him more money to play football than me. Period.

During training camp, Jones mentioned the possibility of guaranteeing close to $200 million for Parsons. Cleveland Browns player Myles Garrett currently has the largest guarantee for a non-quarterback player with $123.5 million. Jones expressed his confidence that the agreement is settled in his mind and that only administrative details are missing to finalize it. It appears Jones is willing to have Parsons play this season under the fifth-year option, at a cost of $21.324 million, and consider the use of franchise tags in the future. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed confidence that Parsons will be on the field for the opening game against the Eagles.I have agreed to give more money in terms of guarantee than any other defensive player. I’ve already done it. Now, I’m the one writing the check. Micah has three more years with the Cowboys. At some point, someone has to have the last word. My job is to manage the check, okay? Micah has to play. What is the least important part of this whole equation we’re talking about? … The lawyer or the agent, okay? He works for Micah.

We really have three years to solve this. It’s a basic contract. It’s there to be used. I did it with Dak Prescott. And we couldn’t reach an agreement, so Dak played the last year of his contract, then we put the franchise tag on him. So that’s exactly what happened with Dak, and we moved forward, and eventually we got a contract and made Dak the highest-paid player in the NFL. So the precedent is to handle it like with Dak… If you don’t, it’s very costly. It’s very costly for everyone.
