Cam Little Attempts a 70-Yard Field Goal with the Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little starred in an impressive moment during the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at EverBank Stadium on Saturday night. Little made a 70-yard field goal just as the first half expired, an attempt that, if it had been in the regular season, would have broken the NFL record.

“I’m not going to lie, there was probably a little bit of doubt,” Little commented. “But, we tried a lot of long field goals in training camp. We did some from 60, probably more than 65 in practice. So, I wanted to go out there and see what would happen.”

The ball appeared to cross the crossbar with a distance of between 3 and 4 yards to spare. Had it counted, it would have surpassed the NFL record of 66 yards, set by Justin Tucker against the Detroit Lions on September 26, 2021. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, there have been eight failed attempts at 70-yard or more field goals in the Super Bowl era. Little celebrated effusively after the goal, raising his fists several times. The ball possessor, Logan Cooke, gave him a shove. Travis Hunter was the first of the players to reach Little from the sideline, giving him a celebratory chest bump before being surrounded by the rest of his teammates.

“It was great to see him, wasn’t it?”, said Jaguars coach Liam Coen.

Little, selected in the sixth round of the 2024 draft from Arkansas, made 27 of 29 field goal attempts in his rookie season. He converted five of his six attempts from 50 or more yards, including one of 59 yards that tied Josh Scobee’s record as the longest in franchise history. When Coen called a timeout with one second remaining in the first half, he looked at Little to gauge his reaction to the 70-yard field goal attempt. There was no hesitation.

“Logan and I were like, ‘We want to kick it. We want to kick it,'” Little said. “When he gave me the opportunity… we went out there, and the adrenaline is a beautiful thing.”

Little, who left the field with the ball, commented half an hour after the match that he still hadn’t seen the ball cross the crossbar. He is 1.85 meters tall and sometimes has trouble seeing over the offensive linemen, but he knew he had a chance.

“When Logan’s eyes got big, he was kind of freaking out,” Little said. “I got him good, obviously.”
