New York Giants Prioritize Special Teams with Harbaugh Focus

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Giants have placed a significant emphasis on improving their special teams this offseason. This decision reflects the vision of new coach John Harbaugh, who has a long track record of success in this area. The Giants’ priority list included a punter, a field goal kicker, a long snapper, and a couple of special teams standouts. Harbaugh, known for his work on special teams, is looking to transform this area of the game. Harbaugh, who was the special teams coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles for nine seasons, has consistently demonstrated the importance of this aspect of the game. During his time in Baltimore, even as head coach, he regularly participated in special teams meetings. The Giants, who finished 25th in special teams EPA last season, with a -20.78, and 26th since Joe Schoen took over as general manager in 2022, recognize the need to improve.

Nothing will be taken for granted.

Harbaugh brought Chris Horton, special teams coordinator, with him from Baltimore, even adding the title of assistant head coach to secure his arrival. This was just the beginning of a series of moves. The Giants signed All-Pro punter Jordan Stout from the Ravens to a record contract and added kicker Jason Sanders and long snapper Zach Triner. In addition, they brought in Elijah Campbell and Cam Jones, both with experience on special teams. They also re-signed Gunner Olszewski and signed Calvin Austin III, who has also returned kicks. These actions demonstrate Harbaugh’s priority in improving the Giants’ special teams. The question now is: how much will this strategy really make a difference?
