Austin Ekeler Suffers Season-Ending Injury

Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler has suffered a rupture of his right Achilles tendon, which will prevent him from playing for the rest of the season. The news was confirmed after Ekeler left the game against Green Bay on Thursday night.

Ekeler was injured in the fourth quarter of the game, falling to the ground without contact. He had to be helped off the field before being taken to the locker room.

Washington coach Dan Quinn commented that Ekeler’s absence would be significant, highlighting his unique contribution to the team.

Ekeler, who served as the primary running back, was crucial to the team’s offense, especially in third-down situations and passing plays. Last season, he accumulated 367 rushing yards and 366 receiving yards.

Ekeler was also valued for his leadership in the running back group and on offense in general.

The team has three other running backs on its roster: rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, veteran Jeremy McNichols, and Chris Rodriguez.

Before the start of the season, the Commanders traded Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers.

Ekeler, who played his first seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, came to the team as an undrafted free agent.

The runner shared a message on their Instagram story on Saturday:

“Thank you all for the love and good wishes. I appreciate you all.”
