PITTSBURGH – St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman Willson Contreras suffered a contusion on his left hand after being hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes. The incident occurred while Contreras was leading off the top of the fourth inning in Tuesday night’s 1-0 loss to the Pirates. Contreras remained in the game to run the bases, but was put out at home by the Pirates’ left fielder, Tommy Pham, at the end of the inning, while trying to score from second base after a single by Pedro Pages. After the game, Contreras underwent X-rays on his hand, which were negative. Both he and the Cardinals manager, Oliver Marmol, indicated that it is unlikely that the three-time All-Star will participate in the last game of the series on Wednesday. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Contreras was replaced by Alec Burleson, who moved from left field. Garrett Hampson took his place in left field. In the current season, Contreras has a batting average of .248 in 82 games, with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. The 33-year-old receiver suffered a fracture in the middle finger of his left hand, which ended his season on August 24th, also due to being hit by a ball.
The Cardinals will have a day off on Thursday before starting a three-game series on Friday in Chicago against the Cubs. When I get hit on the arm or hand, I worry a little. I think I’ll be fine, just one or two days of rest.
