Jim Irsay’s Daughters Take Over the Legacy of the Indianapolis Colts
Jim Irsay, who grew up in a privileged environment, passed away at the age of 65. His passing marks the beginning of a new era for the Indianapolis Colts, with his daughters at the helm of the franchise. Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson, who have been immersed in the world of American football their entire lives, are ready to take on the leadership.
Irsay’s connection with the team was forged from a young age, performing various tasks within the organization. This experience provided him with a deep understanding of the football business, knowledge that he would apply when becoming the owner after his father’s death in 1997.
Irsay’s three daughters have followed a path similar to their father’s, actively participating in different areas of the team and preparing to take on the role of co-owners.
“I started in the ticket office… But over the years, my father has encouraged my sisters and me to get involved in the places that interest us. When we were growing up, it was: ‘You don’t have to do this’. But I love it.”

Irsay-Gordon has taken on a central role in the team’s management, actively participating in key areas such as marketing and sports. In addition, she is part of several ownership committees and has demonstrated a deep understanding of every aspect of the organization.
Foyt, with experience in special events, and Jackson, who leads the franchise’s philanthropic initiatives, also play important roles. Jackson chairs the NFL’s employee benefits committee.
Irsay-Gordon has been a constant figure at team practices, closely observing coaches and players to broaden his knowledge of the game.
“Carlie, specifically, will be the perfect owner for modern times. Carlie has been immersed in the business for probably over a decade at this point. She is intelligent, continuously learns, works rigorously to understand football from a scouting and coaching perspective. She also has the rare combination of appreciating tradition and professional experience, but not being tied to it because she is a progressive thinker. Very good people skills as well. She will be a great administrator of the organization.”

In 2014, Irsay-Gordon temporarily took over his father’s position during a suspension imposed by the league. Now, he returns to the spotlight.
“People can underestimate her if they want, but she is tough, shrewd, intelligent, works very hard, knows about football and is innovative. She will do great as long as she surrounds herself with the right people.”

During her time with the organization, Irsay-Gordon has had a significant impact on restructuring the business side of the franchise. In this transition, two of Irsay’s confidants, Pete Ward and Dan Emerson, will continue to play key roles.
Although there are still questions about how the sisters will make joint decisions and the impact of taxes, there is no doubt that Irsay’s daughters have been preparing for this moment their entire lives.
