Key Figures Advance in the Race to the American Football Hall of Fame

The wait for the Pro Football Hall of Fame continues, and iconic figures like Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, and Larry Fitzgerald have overcome a crucial phase on their path to sporting immortality. Alongside them, Jason Witten and Frank Gore have also been selected as semifinalists in their first year of eligibility. These five new candidates join 21 other players from the modern era, forming a group of 26 aspirants who have passed the first stage of voting by the selection committee, composed of 50 members. The next stage will reduce the list to 15 finalists, who will be voted on before the Super Bowl in February. Willie Anderson, Torry Holt, Luke Kuechly, and Adam Vinatieri, who reached the final stage in the class of 2025, have already secured their place among the 15 finalists.

Other players who have reached the semi-final stage for the first time are Lomas Brown and Kevin Williams. In addition, Hines Ward, Richmond Webb, Steve Wisniewski, Rodney Harrison, Earl Thomas, Vince Wilfork, and Robert Mathis will also compete for a place in the final. In addition to the 15 finalists of the modern era, the committee will consider three veteran players, a coach, and a contributor for the class of 2026. It is expected that between four and eight new members will be elected under the current format. In the last edition, only four individuals were honored, marking the smallest class in two decades. Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald are emerging as the leading candidates this year. Brees, with 80,358 passing yards and 571 touchdowns, ranks second all-time, surpassed only by Tom Brady. His arrival at the Saints in 2006 transformed his career, leading New Orleans to their first Super Bowl title after Hurricane Katrina. Fitzgerald, who played his entire career with the Cardinals, amassed 1,432 receptions and 17,492 yards, ranking second all-time, behind Jerry Rice. Rivers, with 63,440 passing yards, ranks seventh all-time and was recognized as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2013. Witten, with 1,228 receptions and 13,046 yards, stands out as one of the most prolific tight ends. Gore, with 16,000 rushing yards, ranks third in NFL history. Kuechly, although with a brief career, left a significant mark, being a five-time All-Pro. Vinatieri, known for his precision, is the historical leader in points (2,673) and field goals (599). Holt, a key piece in the Rams’ success, finished his career with 920 receptions and 13,382 yards. Anderson, considered one of the best right tackles of his time, was All-Pro three consecutive times.
