The Jacksonville Jaguars and the Cleveland Browns were involved in a trade that involved cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Greg Newsome, along with draft picks, according to sources close to the situation. The Jaguars sent Campbell and a 2026 seventh-round pick, previously obtained from the Eagles, to the Browns. In return, they received Newsome and a 2026 sixth-round pick that the Browns had acquired from the Jets.

Player Details

Newsome, 25, was selected by the Browns in the first round of the 2021 draft. He is currently playing on a fifth-year option that earns him $13.38 million and is expected to become a free agent after the season. After playing as an outside cornerback in his rookie season, Newsome moved to the nickel position. Martin Emerson Jr.’s injury opened the door for him to return to the outside cornerback position, where he feels more comfortable. In the five games this season, Newsome has recorded 23 tackles and five passes defended.

Campbell, also 25, was selected by the Jaguars in the second round of the 2021 draft. He signed a four-year, $76.5 million contract extension, with $53.4 million guaranteed, before the start of the 2024 training camp. In the five games this season, Campbell has recorded six passes defended, one forced fumble, and 34 tackles. His best season was in 2022, where he intercepted three passes, forced a fumble, recovered two, and defended 15 passes, helping the Jaguars win the AFC South. In 2023, he was limited to 11 games due to a hamstring injury, where he had one interception and five passes defended. This is the second time in six months that the Jaguars and the Browns have made a trade. In April, Jacksonville sent four draft picks to Cleveland to move up three spots and select Travis Hunter. Cleveland has also been active this week, acquiring left tackle Cam Robinson from the Houston Texans and sending quarterback Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals.
