Mark Andrews: New Receiving Yards Record for the Ravens
Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews wasted no time making his mark in the record books during Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. In the fifth play of the game, Andrews caught an 11-yard pass, thus surpassing the record for receiving yards in franchise history. Andrews, one of quarterback Lamar Jackson’s favorite receivers, needed only 4 yards to reach the mark, and with this reception he reached 5,785 yards in his career. The previous record was held by wide receiver Derrick Mason, who accumulated 5,777 yards for the Ravens between 2005 and 2010.With this achievement, Andrews becomes the fifth tight end to lead a franchise in receiving yards. The others are: Ozzie Newsome (Browns), Antonio Gates (Chargers), Travis Kelce (Chiefs), and Jason Witten (Cowboys). Andrews was selected in the third round of the 2018 draft by then-general manager Newsome. Although the Ravens also selected tight end Hayden Hurst in the first round, Andrews became a primary target when Jackson took over as starting quarterback. This is Andrews’ latest record with the Ravens, who also holds the franchise records for touchdowns (55) and receiving yards in a single season (1,361 in 2021). In addition, before Sunday’s game, he was seven receptions away from surpassing Mason on the Ravens’ all-time receptions list. Andrews, 30, set the record in what has been his least productive season. Before Sunday, his 27.1 receiving yards per game were the worst of his eight-year career. Andrews, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. The Ravens’ offensive coordinator, Todd Monken, recently said about Andrews: “He’s in a rare category of players I’ve been with who are tough, practice non-stop, and that shows in the game. He’s a warrior.”Congratulations Mark!
