Dennis Schröder victim of racist insults at the EuroBasket

The captain of the German national basketball team, Dennis Schröder, was the victim of racist insults during the match against Lithuania in the EuroBasket. The incident, which took place on Saturday, led to the expulsion of a fan from the rest of the tournament by FIBA officials. The German Basketball Federation identified two people as the alleged perpetrators of the insults, who were removed from the stadium in Tampere. Subsequently, FIBA confirmed that a fan was identified via video and will not be able to attend the next matches.

Making monkey noises, that’s something I don’t respect. No matter the status, the insults, everything is fine. But racism simply has no place in this sport. That’s something that’s not okay.

FIBA also plans to meet with the Lithuanian delegation to discuss what happened. The organization has strongly condemned hate speech and discriminatory conduct, reaffirming its commitment to create an inclusive and safe environment for players and fans. FIBA has provided the relevant images and information to the local authorities, who are investigating the incident. Schröder, who is Black, heard the insults while heading to the locker room during halftime.

I noticed that Dennis was very upset, and rightly so. This kind of thing has no place in sport or competition. We hope this calms down and can be resolved somehow.

Alan Ibrahimagic, interim coach of Germany
Schröder, a player for the Sacramento Kings, led Germany with 26 points, securing the third consecutive victory in the group stage of the tournament. The Germans are already qualified for the next round in Riga, Latvia. Ibrahimagic was in charge of the team in place of Alex Mumbru, who was indisposed.
