NBA veteran coach Mike Woodson has reached an agreement to join the Sacramento Kings’ coaching staff, led by Doug Christie, as an assistant coach.
Woodson, who played for Indiana under Bob Knight from 1976 to 1980, was selected in the first round of the 1980 NBA draft by the New York Knicks.
After a career in the NBA that included 11 years as a player and 25 years as a head and assistant coach, Woodson was hired by his alma mater in 2021 to replace Archie Miller.
Woodson stepped down at the end of the 2024-25 season, after the Hoosiers failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year. Previously, he had led the team to the tournament in his first two seasons, including a second-place finish in the Big Ten in 2022-23.
The last time Woodson coached in the NBA was during the 2020-21 season, as an assistant on Tom Thibodeau’s team with the Knicks.
Last month, Sacramento formalized a multi-year contract to make Christie the franchise’s next head coach. Christie had been serving as interim coach since late December.
The Kings won 20 of their first 31 games under Christie, but finished with a 7-13 record in the last 20 games of the season. Christie was expected to restructure his coaching staff in the offseason.
