John Wall Says Goodbye to the NBA After 11 Seasons

Point guard John Wall has announced his retirement from the NBA, marking the end of an 11-season career in the league. Wall, 34, developed most of his professional career with the Washington Wizards, the team that selected him as number one in the 2010 draft, coming from the University of Kentucky. The five-time All-Star ends his career with averages of 18.7 points and 8.9 assists per game.

Today, I leave the court, but I don’t walk away from the game. Basketball will always be in my life, and new opportunities arise. I feel that now is the time to move forward with confidence towards my next chapter.

In addition to his time with the Wizards, Wall played for the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. His best season was in 2016-17, where he averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists for the Wizards, being named to the All-NBA third team. During his prime, Wall was recognized as one of the fastest and most athletic point guards in the league, and he was the champion of the slam dunk contest in 2014. He also stood out as a defender, being included in the All-Defensive second team in 2015. Injuries marked the second half of his career. In the last six seasons, he didn’t play more than half the games, and he didn’t play in the last two years.
