Jaylen Brown Ejected in Celtics’ Loss to Spurs

In a game full of tension, Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown was ejected in the second quarter of the match against the San Antonio Spurs, which ended with a score of 125-116 in favor of the Spurs. The ejection occurred after Brown received two consecutive technical fouls from the officials. The situation that triggered the ejection occurred during an offensive possession by the Celtics, where Brown appeared to step out of bounds while being guarded by Spurs guard Stephon Castle, resulting in a turnover. Brown vehemently protested to referee Tyler Ford, arguing that Castle had pushed him out of bounds.

“In the live game, we did not observe any illegal contact,” Ford stated about the play that generated Brown’s reaction.

Ford sanctioned Brown with a technical foul for “aggressively pointing and using profane language and resentment” regarding the decision. The player continued arguing and referee Suyash Mehta called a second technical foul, leading to Brown’s ejection. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla offered indirect support to Brown with a humorous statement.

“I give a lot of credit to my high school principal. He had the balls to kick out a student. He didn’t leave it to the hall monitor,” Mazzulla commented.

At the time of the ejection, the Celtics were leading the score 51-49. Brown continued arguing while his teammates, Celtics security personnel, Mazzulla, and assistant Sam Cassell tried to escort him off the court. In the 13 minutes he played, Brown scored eight points on 4-of-8 shooting, as well as two rebounds, seven assists, and a steal. At halftime, the score was tied at 58. The player expressed his opinion on the ejection on social media, where he has been critical of the referees in the past, which earned him a $35,000 fine from the NBA in January. Brown averaged 28.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 57 games before the match.

“I completely understand where Jaylen is coming from,” Mazzulla said. “Absolutely. And I support him 100%. I think he was absolutely right to be frustrated and do what he did.”
