Basketball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games: Schedule Revealed

The organizers confirmed that basketball at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will begin two days before the opening ceremony. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has revised the basketball schedule for the Los Angeles Games, setting the matches to begin on July 12, 2028, ahead of the opening ceremony on July 14. It has not yet been specified whether the men’s tournament, the women’s tournament, or both will begin before the official opening. A draft calendar published last month indicates that three basketball games will be played on July 12 and another three on July 13.

This adjustment allows the quarter-finals to be played over two days and ensures that no match starts before noon, improving the experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters.

The bronze medal matches will take place on July 28 and 29, while the gold medal matches will be played on July 29 and 30, the latter being the closing day of the Games. Other sports are also scheduled to begin before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket, and football. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to begin on the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony which will be held about 1,931 km away. The United States is the current Olympic basketball champion in both the men’s and women’s categories. The women have won eight consecutive golds, and the men, five.
