Santo Domingo. The NBA Cup championship has transcended the sporting aspect for Karl-Anthony Towns. The New York Knicks center has announced a complete donation of the US$530,000 he received as a prize, after winning the mid-season tournament. These funds will be allocated to community programs and housing projects in the Dominican Republic, through his foundation. The Knicks were crowned champions after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 124-113 in the final held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This result made the New York franchise the third to lift the NBA Cup trophy, ensuring each player an economic incentive of more than half a million dollars. Despite the calf discomfort, Towns was instrumental in the decisive game. The 30-year-old player finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals, with six of his 12 field goal attempts successful, in a game of high physical and offensive demand. The star player’s act of solidarity reflects his strong connection to his roots. Son of Dominican mother, Jacqueline Cruz, Towns maintains a constant link with the country and has represented the Dominican Republic in international events, including the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

In 2017, Towns founded the KAT Team Foundation, an organization dedicated to expanding educational opportunities, supporting low-income youth, and raising awareness about autism. His social commitment was recognized in 2024 with the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award, one of the most prestigious social awards in the NBA. While the Knicks celebrate a title that confirms their good competitive moment, for Karl-Anthony Towns the victory takes on an additional dimension: transforming sporting success into a direct investment for the development and well-being of the Dominican Republic.
