Juan Soto Shines, But Mets Fall to Cubs
CHICAGO – Dominican Juan Soto continued his impressive offensive performance by hitting his 43rd home run of the season and accumulating 105 RBIs. Despite this individual achievement, the New York Mets suffered a 10-3 defeat against the Chicago Cubs this Wednesday.
Soto’s hit momentarily reduced the difference in the score. Francisco Álvarez contributed two RBIs for the Mets, who only managed to hit four singles during the game.
Although they lost this game, the Mets remain in the fight for the last wild card spot in the National League, with a one-game lead over Cincinnati and competing directly with Arizona.
The Cubs, already qualified for the playoffs, ended a five-game losing streak thanks to an effective offense and a solid performance from the mound.
Matt Shaw and Michael Busch hit home runs for the Cubs, while Matthew Boyd (14-8) pitched 5.1 innings allowing only two hits, earning the win.
Rookie pitcher Jonah Tong (2-3) took the loss, allowing five runs and seven hits in just two innings.
The crucial moment of the game came in the third inning, when Chicago scored five runs, culminating in a run-scoring double by Ian Happ with the bases loaded. From that moment on, the home offense maintained its pressure.
The Mets will need to improve their performance in the upcoming regular season games if they want to secure their place in the postseason. On the other hand, the Cubs consolidated their position as the first wild card, leading San Diego by 2.5 games.
