San Diego, USA – Dominican pitcher Cristopher Sánchez has rewritten the history of the Philadelphia Phillies, setting a new franchise record with his impressive streak of scoreless innings. Sánchez threw seven impeccable innings in the Phillies’ 3-0 victory over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. With this performance, he extended his streak to 44.1 consecutive innings without allowing runs, the longest for a Phillies pitcher since 1893. The lefty surpassed the previous record, which belonged to Hall of Famer Grover Alexander, who had recorded 41 consecutive scoreless innings in the 1911 season.

Sánchez’s performance was full of key moments. In the fourth inning, a deep fly ball from Manny Machado to left field forced Edmundo Sosa to make an important defensive play. Later, Ramón Laureano hit a double with two outs, but Sánchez managed to dominate Jackson Merrill to keep his streak intact.

The Dominican’s impressive streak began on April 30 against the San Francisco Giants, and since then he has established himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball.

Phillies’ No-Run Records

  • Cristopher Sánchez (2024): 44.1 entries
  • Grover Alexander (1911): 41.0
  • Cliff Lee (2011): 34.0
  • Larry Andersen (1984): 32.2
  • Turk Farrell (1957-1958): 32.2
Sánchez is also approaching historical records in the Major Leagues. His streak is currently the seventh longest in a single season during the Live Ball Era (since 1920), competing with marks set by figures like Orel Hershiser and Don Drysdale. In May, Sánchez has shown exceptional dominance:
  • 5 starts
  • 39 innings pitched
  • 45 strikeouts
  • 3 walks
  • 0 runs allowed
According to historical statistics, Sanchez and Orel Hershiser are the only pure starters to complete an entire month without allowing runs with at least four starts.

Seattle Mariners Reach the Top of the West

In another highlight of the day, the Seattle Mariners secured first place in the American League West Division after sweeping the Athletics with a 9-1 victory in West Sacramento. Julio Rodríguez, from the Dominican Republic, shined on offense with a three-run homer, while Logan Gilbert earned his 50th career win. Seattle dominated the series with a run differential of 22-4, demonstrating a solid combination of batting and pitching, which allowed them to lead the division for the first time this season.
